Now, I know some of you may be brushing this off saying, "of course she hates it. She's a Christian. They are "supposed" to hate it."
While there is some truth to that of course, my hate for it starts from a different place. And besides, I know many Christians who dress up and go trick or treating and have no problem with it at all! In fact, Even Dr. Dobson said in his halloween article last year that as a Christian family, if you are ignoring the Satanic parts of halloween and just want to go out for fun with your kids, that there really is no harm in that.
So...not meaning to be controversial or judgemental at all. It's just that personally, I like nothing about the day, and I hate all of the build-up towards it that starts way back in September.
I agree that there are some pretty darn cute costumes out there, yes. But when you look at the basis of halloween, what is it?
To know, all you have to do is walk into the local walmart or dollar store. I remember when I was a kid, it was scary enough...fake blood that totally looked fake, scary faces, fangs. But lately, it's getting worse...or at least it seems to be! Maybe it's just because I have kids now, but the decorations are gorier, the costumes are more realistic and bloodier. It's just not cool.
Halloween celebrates death, plain and simple. And it's not "let us celebrate the life of a wonderful person who we will miss" death.
It's half rotted corpses coming back from the dead, mutilation, blood, torture just for fun (razor blade in an apple, anyone?), tombstones with body parts sticking out of the grave, etc., etc., etc.
I simply can't understand what is so inviting about a skeleton or skull used as a decoration. It is literally a human being with the skin decomposed off of it. It kind of gives me the eebie jeebies and I have no desire to dedicate an entire day of my life giving things like that any sort of attention.
I really dread walking into a store and seeing all of these things...and having my kids see them. Because as much as someone focuses on the innocent and cute parts of halloween, those things are there, staring us in the face and can't be ignored.
I totally understand that they don't bother some people as much as me, and that most kids probably get used to seeing them, but I just don't care to get used to it.
So, on halloween you will find us at our neighbour's house with a couple of pizzas, a box of candy, a movie for the kids, and visiting time for the adults :) Also, it's much warmer and less work than trick or treating out here in the country!
And as for them "missing out", they get plenty of candy that night...more than they need I'm sure, and it's all the really good stuff since we only buy a box of it. And they dress up pretty much every other day of the year anyway. You may have spotted Myka the dolphin if you've been to our strong start :)

I agree with you for the most part. My boys (well the oldest one) do like to dress up and trick or treat and we do go out with them for a bit.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I don't like all the scary stuff. I hate horror movies and blood/guts and gore, I can't understand WANTING to be scared! Our church used to do a Harvest festival sort of thing on Halloween for a while, I think that's a great compromise :)
nope. i hate it too... (& i think in the same way you do...) My older girls feel pretty strongly about it too. We usually go out for chinese food(??!!) a tradition that my husband's family did when they were little :) i'll be glad when it's over.
ReplyDeleteI am with you. I dislike Halloween with a passion. Don't get it at all. My kids do go trick or treating but I pay little if nothing for a costume because I don't like the holiday so why pay for something I don't like. And we trick or treat in our neighborhood. I am not a fan of anything scary and my kids don't like it either. I would love to have a neighbor or friend to just go to there and not go out. Our walmart down here has a huge black spirit or something and it creaps me out. Fall is my favorite time of year but I do enjoy it much more in November!
ReplyDeleteI'm finding more and more people with aversions to certain holidays. I totally get it. And don't even get me started on St. Patrick's Day. The smell of cabbage?? Worst odor EVER.
