The conversation at dinner tonight went something like this:
Addison: Mom, I've been trying not to lie at all for the last few days, and it feels really good!
Me:Really? That's great Addison! What have you told the truth about?
A: Well, like the eggs in my backpack*
M: Do you find that you get in trouble less?
A: Yes! You and Mrs. Knutsen haven't gotten me mad once!
*She gathered the eggs yesterday and put them in her backpack to bring to the house. She forgot them there, and today at school, all three broke in her backpack :)*
It's amazing what you can learn from your first grader...you see, one of my greatest struggles in life is lying. Most aren't big, but I find it so easy to pass out little white lies here and there. It's something that I know I need to stop...and I give myself little challenges that work for awhile, but the beast still rears it's ugly head eventually.Whether to my husband, others, or even myself, and no matter how small, all lies are destructive. The silly thing is that I know I will feel so much better if I just tell the truth!
Here are the top 10 things I find myself lying about, and would like to stop, even if they seem trivial:
1. Our finances, to Daniel
2. Our finances, to Myself
3. What I've eaten in the day (skirting the weight watchers!)
4. When I've made a mistake and want to make it look like I didn't.
5. Whether I did a specific task (sometimes I'll say I did it just to avoid causing disappointment, then quickly go do it afterwards).
6. My confidence
7. I exaggerate things sometimes, which is still a lie in my book
8. Having a headache...ahem.
9. "I have read and agree to the terms and conditions". I've never read them...not once :p
10. How long it takes me to do a task (if I procrastinated,, and Daniel wonders why it took so long).
So there you have it. It looks like my poor husband gets the brunt of my lies...and so do I. It's hard to tell the truth to someone else when you are lying to yourself about something!
And to think God used my first grader to show me this.
I'm linking up with Miss Mommy. I can't get the actual button to work, so just click her name to see her awesome blog and the rest of the linkys!
Hey Jade-
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this post. Telling the truth takes guts. For myself, it's tough because I have to admit that there are things I do poorly. Whether it's a cliche or not though, it's easier knowing that someone else goes through this too.
Way to go
Great quote - Speak the truth even if your voice shakes. I am definitely guilty of #9, and probably most of the others too.
ReplyDeleteThought provoking post. Telling the truth is important...even for the one doing the telling. Thanks for the reminder, love the egg story.
ReplyDeleteI hear you, Jade ... lying is my besetting sin too. It's been a long slow, painful, death in my life for something that doesn't want to die. I have to be on guard, but Jesus is faithful! He will destroy it, and it does get easier.
ReplyDeleteSweet post. You are awesome for sharing!! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWe host a linky party “Help a Momma Out” every Tuesday. This would be a perfect link up too! I would love if you added it!!
Thanks for considering :) Have a great day!
