Sunday Night Thoughts

Thumb Sucking...it's one of those things. The thing that everyone tells you "don't let her suck her thumb!" and "take it out and put the soother in right away so she won't get hooked on her thumb!" It's very well meant advice, but when you have a newborn who screams into the night, who violently refuses the soother every time it's offered...when you, out of desperation, try to hold the soother in so that maybe, eventually she will latch on and "get hooked". When you have been through that and you are a weary mother...and then she's quiet. You look over and find that she has in fact, found her thumb and is soothed. At that point, thumb sucking goes from a "I would never let my child do that!" to a "Thank you Jesus!" type moment.

I say all that to say this: I have two thumb suckers, and one of them happens to be our strong-willed child, Myka. She is three now, and I have noticed that her teeth are beginning to be affected by the sucking. Yes, we probably should have taken action earlier, but I was a bit scared to say the least.
Scared? Why?...you may ask. Well, for the last 18-20 months I have been potty training Myka. It was terrible. I won't go into a ton of detail, but basically, she would beg for underwear, then start using them as a diaper and beg for a diaper, and the cycle continued. My house and van smelled like a urinal. I cried multiple times out of frustration.

She is finally to the point where she hasn't had an accident in over 6 weeks, and I couldn't be happier! And now breaking the thumb sucking habit...the thought of going through what we went through with potty training almost makes me want to curl into a ball under my covers and never emerge!

So far we have tried tape (takes it off), cayenne (cries, then keeps sucking after it's gone), bitter nail polish (doesn't even seem to care one bit), and constant reminders without trying to be naggy.

So. Wish us luck! LOL

On another note, I made these enchiladas tonight, and can't recommend the recipe enough. They are SO yummy, and easy!

Aaaand, now I need to wrap it up because we are about to watch Netflix and our turtle speed internet gets overloaded with both blogging AND a movie :)

have a great week!

I did a bad job of taking photos that included all of the girls this week, but I really love this one. Addison snapped it today :)

    1. Thank you! My friend's son needs to get a retainer because his teeth have been so affected by it...it scared me lots because I don't want huge dental bills :( I sure hope her "strong will" breaks down in this area after awhile though LOL!

  3. Congrats on the potty training! That's a huge milestone. Good idea to give yourselves a little break before tackling another big thing.

My oldest sucked her fingers often, mostly when she was nervous and I found that distracting her was the best remedy. Giving her something else to do with her hands, something to hold, a soft or silky thing to rub, kept her from putting her fingers in her mouth as much. She still does occasionally but I think at this point she'll totally stop on her own as she gets a little older. Good luck!
