Everytime I make tacos, I remember a day in highschool when our english class read a short story about tacos. In the story, the boy described how he layered his taco (and why), and then went on to describe every bite...like how the first bite is mostly shell, and pretty much cracks the rest of the shell, so that a couple bites in you are pretty much stuffing your face with a handful of filling. Fast forward a couple years, and I remember a friend who was over for supper telling me how he liked to layer his meat first, then cheese over the hot beef so it would melt...and I disagreed. I still do. I really don't like melted cheese on my taco.
So now, whenever I make tacos ( and I make them alot!) I think about these two experiences and it makes me really think about how I'm making my tacos LOL
Anyway, this is my crazy thinking behind the fine art of taco assembly:
First, I start with a hard shell, because I just like them better than soft shells. Soft shells are for fajitas.
My first layer is refried beans, fairly thick
second, taco beef (sometimes I mix in a can of brown beans and it's yummy!)
third, sour cream, and lots of it!
fourth, tomatoes
fifth, cheese....if you put it right on top, it never stays in the shell
sixth, lettuce
and THAT is my perfect taco.
What does your taco layering art look like?
gasp! you do it soooo wrong! however can you enjoy a taco like that! ;) it goes meat, cheese, salsa, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and then salsa again...mmm...in a FRIED soft taco shell!! (fill taco shell with beef, then fry lightly on each side in oil) yummm!

no melted cheese!! yuck! lol
ReplyDeleteSo funny!!!
ReplyDeleteMy mom made tacos A LOT growing up. I don't make them so much anymore (I've turned to a burrito girl). We are vegan so here's what ours were:
corn shell, black lentils, soy yogurt (one time my mom accidentally got vanilla and I can still taste the sweet/salty gross taste in my mouth!), then tomatos, lettuce on top!
I make homeade guac and put it on EVERYTHING (I even used it as salad 'dressing' last night LOL). So if I ever get it to gether to buy/toast taco shells, I'd be sure to add a layer of my guac :)
oh my goodness Leah, that vanilla yogurt thing almost made me lose my breakfast! LOL Reminds me of the time my gramma and I put sugar instead of salt on our fries at Wendy's!
ReplyDeleteI second the guacamole though! Although, I very rarely do more than mush up an avocado and add lime juice...but I eat it lots!
