This is What Catching Up After a Hiatus Looks Like

I remember when I started this blog 8 years ago. I didn't ever really know what to blog about, so I just wrote about our day, and added a few of my favourite photos in. I wrote about everything, even if it seemed insignificant at the time...like things that Addison and Tegan would say to each other, or the fact that Daniel and toddler addison set up a garden bench for me one day while I was napping. At the time I thought I was writing about pretty boring stuff. It wasn't brilliantly worded, and it didn't seem like anything that anyone else would want to read about. On the plus side, though I only blogged about small things, I blogged often, and that was the best thing I could have done. Why? Because now I can go back into the archives and spend hours reliving our lives. They say that childhood passes in the blink of an eye, but words like that don't really sink in with me until I try and remember what it was like when Addison was taking her first steps, or when Tegan had colic and needed to be bounced for hours a day (ok, that one I don't need to remember as clearly!).
My point with all of that is that I don't do that anymore, and I think I'm going to regret it. With blogging having evolved into an entire other world, it's easy to feel like there's no point in posting something so trivial, because no one would really care. But I care. And back then, the people who really wanted to know what was going on in our lives, like grandparents and close friends, cared. They read and commented on almost every post! So, what I'm really trying to say is that I think I need to revert back to the "old days" of blogging. You know, give up on the fact that I will never be a captivating photographer, my kids will probably not be stylishly dressed for all of the blog photos, and I probably won't write any "viral" posts that share some deep epiphany about being a woman or a mom. I need to just go back to blogging about my kids because one day, all too soon, I'll be writing about Addison's graduation, or about Danica going to kindergarten (whooo! cue the waterworks!).

Speaking of "little things", Tegan just walked in to explain to me why she randomly asked for my email address earlier.
"It's because I wanted to go on Facebook on my DS. I'm allowed."

"No you're not. Facebook won't allow you to even sign up for an account until you're 12, sorry."

"oh."

Aaaaand, Facebook crisis successfully avoided! At least until she finds out from her friends that you don't have to be totally honest about your birthday when you register. Oh please let that be years away! LOL

Last night Myka broke a toy that Tegan had won at school. It was a little dollar store bug and probably would have broken right away anyway, but Tegan was understandably upset. By that point in the day, my parenting skills were effectively numbed by the sheer volume of noise in the house and I didn't want to talk to them and work through it. Thankfully, Captain Awesome (aka; Daniel) had just come home and was more than willing to deal with it. From my spot on the bed where I had laid down to "regroup", I could hear him talking to them with his patient, authoritative tone. Minutes later, he came to the bedroom smiling. "Myka is such a ham" he said. "She made me laugh twice while I was talking to her about breaking the toy."
I asked what she had said, and he said that in the middle of him explaining why she had done wrong to Tegan, Myka dropped her head and said, "yeah, that wasn't good at all." A few sentences later, she did the same, saying, "that's not nice."

Oh man, seriously so much has happened since I wrote a proper blog post! Addison's birthday party was last Friday after school. We decided to do a fairly small, casual party at our house...no big themes or anything. Three of her friends who live close decided to surprise her by riding their horses over! It worked out so well. All of the girls loved riding the horses, and one of their dads came to help give the smaller girls rides. Addison had such a great time, and even got to have a friend spend the night :) The only hiccup with the whole party is that I forgot to check the BBQ propane and we ran out as it was preheating for the hotdogs....so we pan fried them :)
Her actual birthday is this Saturday, and she is excited to get to spend it with Grandma and Grandpa Steckly! The girls and I are heading down there tomorrow to spend the weekend.

And finally, the cat had kittens. Princess is her name, and she and Addison are best friends, so you can imagine how exciting it was when she had them! The girls all love checking on them, although Princess has already moved them once to a quieter spot to avoid all of the little hands touching her babies!! It's really cute to watch Addison take care of them. She goes all out, including plugging he iPod dock into the room where they are to play quiet music, and refreshing the scentsy warmer with a scent that she is sure the cat will love :)

P.S. The girls finished school for the summer today!! Tegan is done grade one and Addison is done grade two. Yikes, they are growing up fast!! I am going to do my best to cherish every moment with Myka over the next year before I have to send her to school too :)

Last Day of Grade 2!

I need to get a better picture still, but...last day of Grade1!!!

Well, now I have to go finish packing and get everyone ready for soccer. I'll be back later to post thankful thursday!
